How should a temporary board-up request differ from a rebuilding contract?

Name the opening to be secured, who has authority to approve access and the temporary work being requested. Ask for final replacement, structural work and later removal of the temporary protection to be addressed separately. A quick description of “secure the house” leaves important parts of the job undefined.

What to establish first

From a safe position, describe whether the issue is an open door, broken window or roof opening. Do not climb, cross a barrier or enter a damaged room to measure it. If you only have a photo from someone approved to enter, explain that it is your source and that the present condition may need confirmation.

Keep emergency access clear. Follow limits set by the fire department or building official. A plan for securing an opening should not assume that every entrance can be sealed. Tell the person planning the work if people inside, investigators or other approved trades still need an agreed route into the building.

Agree the cleanup scope

The temporary-work estimate should name the opening and what will cover it. Ask where it will be fixed, who can approve that and what it is meant to protect. Clarify who will check it afterward and how you report a problem. A temporary cover cannot promise to stop all weather, entry or further damage.

Before accepting a plan for longer repairs, ask which damaged parts have been checked and which remain uncertain. A new window, frame repairs and a temporary cover are three distinct tasks. Check the license and permits needed for building work. A board-up visit does not settle those questions.

  • Is the request for security, weather protection or both?
  • Who can approve work at this property?
  • Who handles removal when final repairs begin?

Local checks and the next decision

St. Lucie Village maintains its own permit application and reroof forms. Fort Pierce and unincorporated St. Lucie County have separate building offices. A mailing address with the same city name can therefore need a different repair handoff. Check the actual parcel before selecting forms or accepting a permit exemption.

Keep safe photos with the opening list and the signed scope for temporary work. On the call, tell us whether officials still restrict access and whether the opening is at ground level or higher. Check availability and the next steps before you plan around a visit time.
